Over the last 30 years as a global executive, I’ve developed hundreds of people for global corporations, and it’s become a passion of mine to help people with their career development. Before I start sharing the top 10 list of career secrets, I want to challenge you about the most important first step. It is the foundation for a successful career. If you are unwilling to build that foundation, you will not maximize your potential and should not continue because there will be no outcome! Sounds harsh, but I need to stress this one as I see so many people with potential but not willing to do the most important first step to acknowledge and understand:

Not your boss, not top management, not your parents, not your partner, not any friend – only YOU!
No excuses, and do not point fingers at others. Accept the truth and use it to your advantage.
It is not complicated but very significant!
Look for the next mirror, look into it, and tell yourself it is me, and I take responsibility!
Here comes the good news: if you are accountable, you can take control, influence, and change your status quo, and I will teach and help you how to do so.
There’s so much more to a career than being qualified, skilled, and waiting for a promotion. Developing your career is a journey that takes a lot of willingness, planning, execution, and stamina as results are not always as planned. The good news is that you’re not alone, and career development isn’t a secret anymore. Different solutions can guide you and show you how to develop yourself, so you can move forward on your career path. Don’t get me wrong, it is an investment in time, effort, and money, and it will not happen in a week or two.

There’s no denying that education and skills are important; don’t get me wrong, they are! Many young adults and their parents look forward to a college degree, so important they take out loans or take credits and pay them back for years.
But why is this so important?
Is it the skill we learn?
The title we own after we paid for it?
Or the experience we make?
It’s because everyone wants a well-paid job, in the best-case scenario, a job with enough money to live well.
Career development is an area with too many stories and too many lies.
People who say you need a college degree or a master’s to get a job aren’t telling the truth. Education is a big deal, but it’s not a guarantee. Many people don’t realize that getting a job isn’t the same as developing a job or making a career. You can do your job better or get a better-paying job with whatever you learn or achieve. Education and skills are valuable and a door opener to a potential career, but they do not guarantee a career. We will see in the next lessons how a career is influenced by a variety of variables and input factors. Doing this lets you focus on the most important factors in your career plan.
